The Toyota Corolla has been one of the best selling cars worldwide since its introduction in 1974. Corolla translates to “small crown” in Latin. The brand’s first generation was introduced as the Corolla Sprinter in 1966 at a dealership retail outlet in Japan. A more rounded body was introduced in 1970 with the second generation, while the third generation, launched in 1974, revealed a larger, heavier body and introduced a two-door liftback model.
A square edged design and simpler front end structures were part of a restyling unveiled with the fourth generation in 1979. In the Japanese market, a fuel injection option was added. By the fifth generation launched in 1983, most models used front wheel drive and had a sloping front bonnet and sharp-edged style, which became more rounded and aerodynamic with the sixth generation models produced from 1987 to 2006.
The aerodynamic styling was further refined over subsequent generations. In 2006, the tenth generation featured a narrower model launched in Japan and wider model released on the international market. The eleventh generation was launched in 2012. It featured a sedan and wagon in Japan while the larger E170 model was launched in North America. A hatchback version, the Corolla iM, was introduced in 2017.
Sedan, hatchback, and station wagon designs were launched as part of the Corolla’s twelfth generation in 2018.
