Power-folding third-row seats, electronic stability control, and tire pressure monitoring were added to the fourth generation in 2006, while the fifth generation Explorer took on a crossover design that won the 2011 North American Truck of the Year award. Further redesigns were unveiled with the 2016 and 2018 model years.
