The appeal of SUVs shows no signs of waning. People prefer them over sedans for more seating room and cargo space. While an SUV can be a bit pricier than a standard car, buying a pre-owned SUV can get you more for your money. In 2020, there are many great used SUVs you can find, representing recent model years as consumers turn in their leases, including the:
Honda CR-V
The CR-V is a compact model that comfortably fits four adults, yet provides a roomy cabin and cargo area. It is highly maneuverable and, as of 2016, included a range of safety features such as automatic braking, blind-spot camera, and lane keeping assist as well as forward collision warning. The CR-V runs on a 2.4-liter engine with 185 hp; the FWD model delivers up to 34 mpg highway.
Toyota RAV4
The 2017 Toyota RAV4 sports a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine that can get it up to 60 mph in 10 seconds. Featuring a 2.5-liter gas engine with two electric motors and a CVT transmission, the RAV4 Hybrid AWD provides a fuel economy of up to 34 mpg city. All 2017 models were fit with Toyota Safety Sense P, which includes Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, while a Platinum trim for gasoline models integrates a foot-activated power rear liftgate and heated steering wheel.
Mazda CX-9
The CX-9 offers a luxury feel at an affordable price, similar to the smaller CX-5, with three rows of seating. It is quite agile as far as handling; in fact, it handles much like a smaller vehicle, so it is fun to drive. A user-friendly infotainment system is a standout with the 2016 model year.
Mazda CX-5
A compact crossover, the 2018 Mazda CX-5 provides a combination 27 mpg and is available with a diesel engine. In 2018, cylinder deactivation for the 2.5-liter engine was added. Blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic detection were included with the Sport trim and i-ACTIVSENSE safety assist features were part of the Touring trim.
Ford Edge
While there are just two rows of seating, the interior is spacious. The 2016 Ford Edge was updated with a modern Sync 3 infotainment interface and adaptive steering. Engine options included a 2.0-liter EcoBoost V4, 3.5-liter V6, and 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6, so you can still find a used model that meets your needs.
Hyundai Santa Fe Sport
The 2017 model year was updated with a 7-inch touchscreen. You’ll get 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine with the base model but with the 240 horsepower, 2.0-liter turbocharged engine option, you’ll get even more power. Standard features such as ventilated front seats and an automatic power liftgate set the Hyundai Santa Fe Sport apart from other compact SUVs.
Volkswagen Tiguan
This crossover SUV seats five with a three-row model introduced in 2017. Base S models were fit with a 6.3-inch infotainment touchscreen. The standard 200 horsepower turbocharged engine and six-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic manual control contribute to the Volkswagen Tiguan’s value, which opens the door to great savings with a used model. There’s also the available 4Motion all-wheel drive you might find in a pre-owned inventory.
